Volunteering for a good cause.
Last December 2016 there was a fire in the property I lease. Fortunately no one was injured despite of the damage and the speed that the fire spread all over the other units. Thanks to the fast intervention of the firefighters who were able to extinguish the fire in less than 30 minutes .
I helped my neighbor Fred ,a Viet Nam war vet who suffered from a lung disease, to stay away from danger. He  needed his  oxygen tanks to breath and we all were scared about the spare bottles inside his house. Another neighbor helped me finding them and putting them in a safe place while the firefighters were doing their job.
Later that week, the Red Cross called to help the affected ones. I was not directly affected but I felt like helping others who were in need translating and dealing with the problems and solutions given by Red Cross Gulf coast area. Then, Mr. Andy Meyer ( Red Cross Disaster Program Specialist for Harris County Territory) invited me to install smoke detectors in the area I work as a teacher. The name of the property is Madrid. Most of the renters are from Central American countries. I had the chance to see people that live at a poverty level. Those kids will go to the same schools I work as a teacher. Why not giving then a chance to live better  by preventing a fire to destroy the little ones and the valuable items they possess. It was the perfect motivation for me to install the devices.
I met other people who volunteer too. A high school Student, fellow teachers from an ALIEF Independent School district elementary School, some people from CITGO ( gas stations )and Mr. Meyer's team members.
We all did a great job .
Here there are some pics of the day.
